Dental Extractions Q&A
What is a tooth extraction?
Adult teeth are meant to be permanent, but sometimes a tooth needs to be pulled. Significant decay, disease or damage from trauma may necessitate tooth extraction to preserve the health of your remaining teeth and your mouth.
Tooth extraction can be a treatment option for overcrowding, which occurs when teeth don’t have enough space inside your mouth. Pulling a tooth can give other teeth more space and is sometimes used in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to give you a straighter smile.
A common extraction procedure is wisdom tooth removal. Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that appear at the back of your mouth in your late teens or early twenties. Many people don’t have enough space in their mouth for wisdom teeth and pulling them prevents a variety of complications.
What types of tooth extractions are there?
Simple extractions remove visible teeth. This type of extraction generally requires local anesthesia and takes just a few minutes to complete. With simple extractions, it’s common to feel pressure as Dr. Coates removes the tooth, but you shouldn’t feel pain.
Surgical extractions are required to remove teeth that aren’t visible inside your mouth. Wisdom teeth that haven’t emerged through your gums are an example of a common surgical extraction. General anesthesia may be used for surgical extraction.
At Dentistry Optimized, the team is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to make tooth extraction safe and effective. Dr. Coates always puts patient comfort at the forefront to ensure the most positive experience possible.
What can I expect if I need to get a tooth extracted?
Before your tooth extraction, Dr. Coates will numb the area around the tooth with local anesthesia. The team may offer you nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax during treatment. For surgical extractions, stronger or general anesthesia may be used.
Dr. Coates then begins removing the tooth. He uses forceps to pull the tooth from your jaw. Sometimes, wisdom teeth are impacted, or buried beneath the gums. If this is the case, Dr. Coates cuts into your gum to reach the tooth and remove it.
A hole, called a socket, is left behind when a tooth is pulled. Dr. Coates usually places gauze in the socket to reduce bleeding. Recovery from a tooth extraction can take a few days. Follow Dr. Coates’s instructions for recovery to speed healing and reduce the risk of infection.
